Watched a little of the press conference, and the contrast between Pence and Trump is profound. It's the difference between someone who can govern/lead and someone who can only entertain/demagogue.

Another point scored for Goomshill with an accurate analysis of Robert Mueller's fuck-up in the Concord Management trial
As I pointed out years ago, it was a bluff on a piece of legal fiction where his prosecutors had no chance to win, never expected anyone to respond and were just making a symbolic motion with the charges. The theory used to invent a crime makes everyone posting on PARD a criminal guilty of defrauding the FEC. And proceeding with discovery would mean giving the Russians access to the sensitive evidence. So they tried to deny due process and block discovery, tried delaying tactics even up to the point of dumb stunts like flooding the docket with terabytes of untranslated Russian social media posts, and dragged this trial out until it was forgotten and the news cycle moved onto something so pressing nobody would notice when they dropped the charges.
And as predicted, charges dropped;

WASHINGTON β€” The Justice Department moved on Monday to drop charges against two Russian shell companies accused of financing schemes to interfere in the 2016 election, saying that they were exploiting the case to gain access to sensitive information that Russia could weaponize.
The companies, Concord Management and Concord Consulting, were charged in 2018 in an indictment secured by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, along with 13 Russians and another company, the Internet Research Agency. Prosecutors said they operated a sophisticated scheme to use social media to spread disinformation, exploit American social divisions and try to subvert the 2016 election.

Who are the other players on the scoreboard?

Also doesn't seem entirely accurate to call a seemingly failed prosecution a "fuck-up". The government indicts foreign actors knowing that we'll never make the case. It's naming and shaming. Although obviously naming someone and withdrawing later is embarassing.

That naming and shaming came at the expense of the legitimacy of our institutions, which is what the Russians wanted to subvert.
Why is it the job of prosecutors to make symbolic, geopolitically-charged gestures even when it clearly violates civil rights and due process to do so?
Winning this trial would have been worse than withdrawing the charges, with the tortured legal theory they were employing. There are worse things than embarrassment.

yeah Fauci and Pence should handle the daily updates here (which is important going forward). Let Trump swoop in after the dust settles and do his usual song and dance.

Lol. Did anyone forget that Pence had shown bad instincts, picked up lots of bad fights and pissed off just about everyone during his one term as governor of Indiana? He wasnt term-limited, but he still chose to join the Trump campaign (which was a long-shot bid at that point in time) as VP candidate because he was about to lose his reelection bid... in Indiana.

Pence has been a very good VP so far, but let's not pretend like he's a great politician or would stand any chance in a high-profile national race like the presidential one. He's great in the role of the calm, steady hand, the guy who stands in the back and looks at Trump like he wants to carry his babies. But in most circumstances, he would not be great at being the center of attention. He's a lot better than Trump in circumstances calling for a technocratic approach like coronavirus, but anyone who thinks he'll be a strong presidential candidate is insane.

I don't know enough about the underlying legal theories to debate the point. You'll forgive me if I don't trust the opinion of the guy who spent years trying to undermine the Mueller probe after he does the touchdown dance because just one of their prosecutions failed.

If I could replace Trump with Pence or Haley in 2020, and it was certain, I wouldn't dare vote for Biden.
