I honestly didn't like him back then all that much.

I would have loved Ted Cruz or Martin O'Malley instead of him, but I think the best choice was made given the binary (or trinary?) choice.

I need a butt-shine,
Right now
You are holy,
Oh, sacred Cow
I thirst for you,
Provide Milk.

Buff my balls,
Love the Cow,
Good fortune for those that do.
Love me, breathe my feet,
The Cow has risen.

Wax my ass,
Scrub my balls.
The Cow has risen,
Provide Milk.

oh wonderful. Here I was having a light-hearted laugh at this gas of the story
and nope, it turns out its yet another example of media manipulation and spiking a negative story about their favored candidate
reuters is at least openly admitting to it:

After more than a year of reporting, Menn persuaded O’Rourke to talk on the record. In an interview in late 2017, O’Rourke acknowledged that he was a member of the group, on the understanding that the information would not be made public until after his Senate race against Ted Cruz in November 2018.

Quote
No one in cDc would talk about O’Rourke until I promised not to publish before the 2018 election. That was OK: I wanted the full story for my book, which spans decades, rather than 1 scoop ahead of a state vote. I offered O’Rourke the same terms. He accepted, and we spoke.

The media agreed to spike a negative story about Beto O'Rourke until after the election, at the request of Beto O'Rourke
And we're supposed to trust the media, why?

He already had the goods. He didn't need an interview. Ethical journalists don't make politically motivated agreements to withhold stories for political impact, they give their sources an opportunity to comment and tell them its going to print with or without their comment.
How the fuck can the media pretend that the National Inquirer capture-and-kill was some terrible violation of journalistic ideals at the same time the media was spiking the fairfax story, beto story, etc etc, I lost track of them all

“While I was looking into the Cult of the Dead Cow, I found out that they had a member who was sitting in Congress. I didn’t know which one. But I knew that they had a member of Congress.

And then I figured out which one it was. And the members of the group wouldn’t talk to me about who it was. They wouldn’t confirm that it was this person unless I promised that I wouldn’t write about it until after the November election. That’s because the member of Congress had decided to run for Senate. Beto O’Rourke is who it was.

sounds like he didn't actually have shit to run and was playing guessing games without evidence or access to me

He straight up says he figured out that Beto O'Rourke was a member of the Cult of the Dead Cow before talking to them. It wasn't much of a guessing game. He clearly already had evidence or else he wouldn't be asking them to confirm it.
What kind of investigative journalist could pretend for a second that he has integrity when he's willing to spike a story he's already unraveled, just to spare a politician political embarrassment during a campaign- in exchange for just an interview and quotes confirming it?
When you've already got the name and the organization, actually investigating it, even if you're stonewalled by the direct sources, should be a relatively easy task. Thats like, their job.

Can we pretend that the same sort of selective editorial leniency was extended to say Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation, or any story against Trump?
Heck, we found out that NBC spiked an interview with Julie Swetnick that showed her lying about Kavanaugh until after when it didn't matter.

Are they talking about the hacking group back in the late 90s/ early 2000's?
Most members had no idea who anyone was we were paranoid.
I knew portwolf and rat and neither was beto O'Rourke and I doubt funk was.
