more meaningful would be trade deficit divided by gdp, to factor out the impact of gdp growth.

say the trade deficit remains steady as a percentage of the gdp, but the gdp itself grows by 5% - then a naive estimate is that the trade deficit would grow by about 5% as well.

sure, i dont deny that the trade deficit is really getting worse. its still important to put it into perspective.
