Aside from high name recognition and being an inoffensive white man, Biden has no actual qualities as a candidate. Not a good orator, not charismatic, not particularly sharp/witty (anymore), no strong policies or platform, low energy, a gaffe machine.

His ability to be a consensus and bridge builder might be the only argument in his favor, but that's more an argument for him being a decent president than being a good campaigner.

His qualities are empathy and having a magnetic personality. That literally only works in small states (geographically small and small by population). If you can't actually meet people, someone with his qualities evaporate. I agree with you that in a national election, he would fail miserably (and he has twice!)

But I maintain that those things come secondary to the state of the nation as well as your opponent. For instance, if we took the state of the country in the year 2000 and ran Obama vs. McCain, I'd argue that Obama would have a SIGNIFICANTLY tougher time winning that election. If things are going really well, being a candidate of "change" is a tough sell.

In this election, Trump is facing against the worst possible opponent. If things were going well, I'd probably argue that Cory Booker would have been the ideal candidate for going against Trump.

Sounds great to me. Maybe America should pick candidates like this every time... instead of going with the biggest loudmouth or the one whose words send a thrill up our leg, we choose someone who has experience, character, and the ability to compromise.

People pick who inspires them or gets them angry in the right way. Unfortunately that hasn't led to good governance. America showed up in 2016 and chose their favorite pundit.

I think Biden will work for THIS election but the Democrats are going to have to change their strategy for 2024. I'm not convinced that Kamala is the right candidate because the white working class vote is still a powerful voting block even though they are diminishing. The built-in structural advantage the GOP has is pretty significant. Granted, it really depends on WHO the GOP chooses.

I largely agree, Biden is the worst possible opponent for Trump, who shines when he has an opponet he can spar with and against whom he can draw a contrast. Trump thrives on polarization, and Biden makes it difficult for Trump to create this polarization. Which is why Trump is trying to run against Obama/Harris/Bernie/BLM instead.

In the current environment, Biden is the perfect candidate to sit on the sidelines and watch Trump self-destruct. Biden is forcing Trump to basically fight against himself, and he's losing...

Not all jobs are worth staying at. Take that advice to heart.
