Aside from high name recognition and being an inoffensive white man, Biden has no actual qualities as a candidate. Not a good orator, not charismatic, not particularly sharp/witty (anymore), no strong policies or platform, low energy, a gaffe machine.
His ability to be a consensus and bridge builder might be the only argument in his favor, but that's more an argument for him being a decent president than being a good campaigner.
His qualities are empathy and having a magnetic personality. That literally only works in small states (geographically small and small by population). If you can't actually meet people, someone with his qualities evaporate. I agree with you that in a national election, he would fail miserably (and he has twice!)
But I maintain that those things come secondary to the state of the nation as well as your opponent. For instance, if we took the state of the country in the year 2000 and ran Obama vs. McCain, I'd argue that Obama would have a SIGNIFICANTLY tougher time winning that election. If things are going really well, being a candidate of "change" is a tough sell.
In this election, Trump is facing against the worst possible opponent. If things were going well, I'd probably argue that Cory Booker would have been the ideal candidate for going against Trump.
