WASHINGTON – Another member of the Oath Keepers, a far-right militia group, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to conspiracy and obstruction charges for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol assault.

Federal prosecutors say Caleb Berry participated in planning the riot when a mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump forced their way inside the Capitol while Congress was counting state-certified Electoral College votes. Berry is at least the fourth defendant with ties to the Oath Keepers to reach a plea deal with prosecutors.


Berry was part of a group of Oath Keeper members and associates who went to the Capitol carrying communication devices, vests, helmets and goggles and forced their way to the east side of the building and toward the Capitol Rotunda, prosecutors say. The group wore clothes and patches with the Oath Keepers name, logo and insignia, according to court records.


On Jan. 7, Berry and others picked up firearms they dropped off two days earlier at a hotel in Arlington, Va., just outside Washington, D.C., according to court records.

The Justice Department has charged more than 500 defendants since the Jan. 6 breach, which cost about $1.5 million in damage to the Capitol. As part of his plea deal, Berry agreed to pay $2,000 in restitution. About 140 Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department officers were assaulted in the riot, according to the Justice Department.

Several others have pleaded guilty, including three members or associates of the Oath Keepers.

Jon Schaffer, a heavy-metal guitarist from Indiana, pleaded guilty to obstruction and an additional count of remaining in a restricted building with a deadly weapon.

Graydon Young, a child day care owner from Florida, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction charges.

Mark Grods, an Oath Keepers member from Alabama, also admitted planning, communicating and conspiring with others ahead of the Capitol breach
