She is a white American. It isn't uncommon for a white American to be so ashamed(?) of who they are that they self-identify as other things or disguise themselves by calling themselves "Irish", "German", "Italian", "1/16th Cherokee".....

Cultural appropriation is a long-lasting tradition. Granting non-whites various advantages and headstarts in the academic and professional world is not. Consequently, white people faking an ethnic heritage to exploit affirmative action and similar programs is a relatively new phenomenom, and it is of course highly damaging for someone who wants to become the nominee of a party which is more sensitive and politically correct than ever about everything concerning 'race'.
