You're really underrating the military strength of the EU here. Yes, the US is the military hegemon of the world, no question about that. But the power projection of EU member states together vastly outperforms that of Russia. I'd say only China and of course the USA are ahead.

Also note that the US gained a lot with the military power projection that they have done. It basically assured cultural victory in Middle/South America, most of Europe and a lot of SEA/Asia.
