I miss the knuckle-draggers we used to have, this new bunch are barely 2/10 as far as entertainment purposes go.

The serious conservatives are either very quiet about the Trump presidency to avoid having to actively criticize a Republican president (Cam and the libertarians), stayed still but seemed to move left as the Republican party jumped off the deep end (IceMage), or they went full trumptard (Bogie).

As one of those libertarians, I find it very weird no one would want to criticize him. Theres a new thing to point and laugh at almost daily, if not multiple times. I thought Libertarians cared about civil liberties, which are being violated on a weekly basis. I guess its just embarrassment? I suppose I could say I've moved left, but its more so the right has hilariously/successfully swallowed itself into the black hole that is Trump.

Oh man, you should wait for Cam to show up again and suck Trump's dick. He doesn't come around much, but when he does all he does is defend Trump. I've only seen him actually criticize Trump for the bump stuck ban.

Uh... of course some people thought that. Remember Obama's "magic wand" comment? It was basically making this point, that reversing globalization and automation isn't actually possible.

Do you think the uneducated voters who Trump loves base their votes on data?

Trump's election was based on a fantasy. It was the last(or second to last) gasp of a population who have been marginalized by the modern economy. The inner cities and rusted out factories haven't been revitalized. So the question is whether Trump can keep the fantasy alive for people who don't see America's renewed greatness in their own lives. The "marginal benefit" argument isn't going to bring voters out.

Even the most uneducated Trump voters will be smart and realistic enough to know that Trump cant reverse 50 years of globalization and deindustrialization in just 4 years. The key difference, in my opinion, is that Trump is at least TRYING to bring these jobs back, he's trying to renegotiate those free trade agreements which were a disaster for the Rust Belt, he's at least trying to offer some opposition against China and so on and so forth.

Yes, globalization, automation etc are mighty, transnational forces, and one president of one country almost surely wont be able to really reverse this trend. But an American president can at least slow down and mitigate these forces which are wrecking parts of Middle America instead of doubling down on them (like signing TPP, TTIP, selling out to the Chinese). And that's what Trump is trying to do.

And most crucially: Trump is the first president in half a lifetime who even acknowledges this problem in the first place and tries to do something about it. Reagan, Bush, Clinton, W. Bush, Obama - they all didnt care because globalization and automation made their donors (Republicans) and/or their coastal base (Democrats) richer. So yes, the "marginal benefit" argument wont bring the voters out - but the "he's the first one in decades to see our misery and fight for us"-argument will.
