the sad truth is that "cold war methods" are the only way which stands a chance of forcing the Russians to stop their missile program. "strength" is the only language they understand.

the problem of course being that cold war tactics can take 50+ years to work....

and when we suggested cold war tactics vs North Korea were the best option, and currently working, Trump and his supporters shat on that and said it wasn't working. because they made nukes, just like the Russians are doing.

i guess im just losing track of when we need to be consistent. it appears we cant even stay consistent on whether a country is allowed to make nukes against international treaties.

If only Trumps dad was as good at pulling out as this administration.

The very reason Trump withdrew from this treaty is that the Russians didnt comply with it. So while the treaty was still applying, they did not comply, they broke it. How exactly do you think we could have used the treaty to force them to start complying again?

hmmm, maybe having balls? Sanctions? Using international means? Oh wait, we gave the international community the finger long ago so that probably wouldnt have worked. You are right, the only option was to trash it and do nothing. Thanks!

Russia has been under heavy sanctions over their invasion of Crimea for almost 5 years now, and isnt showing any signs of giving in. Which "international means" could be used against them? They have nukes, so they cant be pressured militarily, they are a permanent member of the UN security council and can veto everything coming their way, and they have China's back because their interests align when it comes to weakening the west.

Building credible retaliation capacities and threatening an arms race in which their weak economy couldnt keep up seem to be the only options at perhaps(!) reining them in.

North Korea is the opposite? or the same?

they (NK) have a weaker economy and shitty nukes.

Russia has a stronger economy, weaker grip on their populace (harder to starve), and perhaps the largest arsenal of nukes on earth of any country.

I can see the logic in that but I could also the some logic is at least trying to make it work.
