If the point of the electoral college is to give small states and lower populated areas more attention then it fails in that regard, instead of tyrrany of the majority we have tyrrany of the fickle.
If the president was elected via the popular vote, there would only be minimal campaigning in states like ohio, wisconsin, pennsylvania (outside of Philly) or North Carolina.
As I said: abolishing the EC would skew the campaigning
even further towards urban areas and urban policy priorities.
You are right in that the EC does not guarantee a fair representation of all sorts of areas and people among the EC battlegrounds, but in recent years, the mix within the battleground states has been pretty good. The only demographic or cultural group which is clearly underrepresented among current battlegrounds is non-florida/non-cuban hispanics, but this might change with arizona becoming a very purple state, and with the recent influx of puerto ricans into florida.
