Perhaps, yes. For the little things like ventilators and protective gear, there might be price gouging to some extent. But skinned was referring to an actual vaccine. Which would be a big fucking deal, and no, the world will not accept charging ridiculous prices for it.

in america how do we combat price gauging in pharmaceuticals? we challenge aspects of the patent to get certain bits unlocked so a cheaper alternative can be created that serves the same purpose.

whomever does patent the vaccine will cry that they had to pay workers double time and hazard pay to create the vaccine, and the patent will stand until an alternative comes out.

and being that its no longer a national emergency the alternative wont get the same speed of light expedited process the FDA is giving vaccine makers now. so for months or even years they'll struggle to get an alternative patented and approved.

all of this "the world will not accept" stuff begs the question "what can we do about it"? we created these systems to make sure the drugs were healthy and safe, but the process is expensive and time consuming. and the companies have built in pricing to exploit this for massive profits.

in reality whether they gauge 1$ per vaccine or 1000$ idk, but it will be gauged. and they'll use the same "war time" breaks they got from the FDA in all of this to justify a price hike. its gonna happen.

This is so front and center that if any corp tried making a killing by gouging on a vaccine they would get crucified. It would be a historically monumental bad PR move.

crucified by whom? these are companies with billion dollar PR budgets to combat getting rectal bleeding as a side effect from allergy medication. the hospitals will still buy 99% of their pills even if a product is gauged. what recourse do we have? twitter? some memes? lol.

American companies sell insulin manufactured for dollars at several hundred times markup every day.

What you're describing happens with diseases that are front and center all the time. Once we're past the peak of infections this will fade into the background and the vaccines will be a similar story, and once the disease is over people on the right will go right back to saying that they need that several hundred times markup to ensure research continues.

Gilead was smart enough to rescind the orphan drug status for remdesivir. Prior to that they had a 7 year window of exclusivity.

In other news. We're up to 8 strains now. Though none of them are more lethal than the previous strains.

Question for all the criticism pointed at Trump and the federal government not doing enough to prepare for the Coronavirus:

What was each of the states' role in preparing for this? Certainly very few saw COVID-19 being as significant as it is now. And state governments likely had less information about the spread and potential world economic implications that Trump and the federal government might have had.

But what amount should have been on the state of New York to prepare for this? I'm not certain. It's easy to place the blame on Trump. But should state governments done more in preparation? ie stock up on ventilators, prepare state health officials and hospitals, etc.

Because I'm not so certain our federal government had that much more info than states on this. China wasn't very forthcoming about all of this. And the quarantines and stay at home orders have come from the states, not the federal government.

I agree once it fades there will be markup. But half a year from now we will still be talking about corona to a certain extent. If WSJ publishes an article how corona vaccines are being sold 50x what it took to create them and if corona is still somewhat prevalent in the news, that company would get shitted on. Something like insulin isn't comparable because it's not like some new disease just spawned highlighting the need of insulin right now.

Fact.. If tRUmp could think that far ahead. He would have Kuschner start a Co. and his own family would be the Haliburton of ventilators. The gov't open checkbook will skyrocket those prices obviously

Fact: people that feel the need to write tRump like this (on purpose) automatically induce me into reading their whole post in Mocking Spongebob.

Cancer and HIV medication says otherwise.

All that shit costs pennies in the gallon to make.

Some good reading material for the criticisms pointed at trump.

While the states should've been preparing, the government is the one that is supposed to be coordinating them, and they really aren't. And he has made a lot of dumb decisions leading up to this and during this. There are still states treating this like it's nothing. My own state has been on top of things from the beginning they only now issued a stay at home order with fines and jail time because people were still treating it like it's a joke. We've been at a stay at home edict for weeks, but because people weren't listening, they finally tacked on fines and jail time. Because the government hasn't instituted any uniform rules, we had states like Arizona declaring golf resorts as essential businesses and their governor barring localities from acting on their own. And Florida keeping their beaches open when they should've been shutting them all down(this has since changed but desantis was an idiot about this) This isn't something you can really leave up to the states to take care on their own when it affects more than their borders. This needs to be a country wide thing, or we're just going to keep having issues.
