Maybe we are misunderstanding each other, but I am not talking about "pleasures." I am talking about the act of living. To say that life is a trial of tests and hardship sounds like a terrible attitude to me. Every second of life is a gift, including those "hardships." I for one am thankful for the hardships I have endured, just as I am thankful for those periods of "complacency and relative happiness."
I've heard that attitude from evangelicals before (that life sucks and all that matters is heaven) and it always reminded me of a kid on Christmas who gets a toy and a sweater, and on opening the sweater says "this sucks" to his parents before playing with the toy.
