my problem with this perspective is that people who preach personal responsibility are the first to do a 180 and seek the very entitlements they regularly demonize
takes an astounding level of cognitive dissonance but these people exist, most recent example being people in texas mooching off government relief funds while claiming the brownies over in puerto rico should learn to look after themselves

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/many-trump-voters-who-got-hurricane-relief-in-texas-arent-sure-puerto-ricans-should/2017/10/20/32da835c-b344-11e7-9e58-e6288544af98_story.html

Kind of a Click bait article name "Many Trump Voters who got hurricane relief are not sure if Puerto ricans should", dont you think?

MANY (that's a broad statement, what's the number count for many), Trump Voters (why does this matter)

The article consisted of what, 3 people's opinions.

Also..

"And she thinks that media coverage of the crisis in Puerto Rico has lacked context, especially in reporting that nearly all of the island is still without electricity."

Do you think maybe that has something to do with the title of the article, or do you really just think white people automatically hate anybody that isn't white? Besides that fact that article title was based on the interview of one person.

Do you really think Americans are against the government providing aid to Puerto Rico after a hurricane?
I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority doesn't object to it.

Wait you mean the people that have been paying tax and working regularly for their entire lives.
To have things taken away by a NATURAL DISASTER. Those people that lost everything they worked HARD for, who are not going to be getting it back automatically. Most of that is done from insurance companies that they've been investing to, and because of that, those insurance companies are required to fulfill their end of the contract. Those who were fortunate to invest in insurance.

That's by no means the same as someone that didn't graduate high school. Or stays at the same job (if they even have a job), with no ambition of finding any route to take in life. But instead wants to spout bullshit about how they can't do it for years on end. That's not a natural disaster, that's a disaster of your own choosing.

depends on which circles you ask, we have conservatives here in pard who don't consider puerto ricans to be american so i wouldn't be too optimistic about polling among a strictly conservative demographic
as for insurance, we're talking about federal flood insurance programs https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/articles/2019/01/09/congress-again-defers-on-reforming-flood-insurance-program
your tax dollars are paying for someone else to have insurance in regions that are prone to flooding
the role of private insurance is not part of a discussion on entitlements

there surely is some level of hypocrisy and perhaps also racism involved, but the comparison between texas and puerto rico is not aaaas straightforward as it seems either. a lot of the infrastructure in puerto rico was mismanaged and in a really pitiful state, and when the hurricane hit the already weakened infrastructure, it compounded the damage. the puerto ricans are not responsible for being hit by a hurricance, but they bear at least some responsibility for the extent of the damages that the hurricane caused them.

maybe a flawed comparison, but if you poll people if they support their healthcare insurance covering the surgery and rehab costs of a car crash victim, it will also make a difference if you tell them that the guy was hit by a wrong-way driver, or if you tell them that he himself was driving 150mph and lost control of his car. support for helping the first guy would surely poll higher than support for the second guy.
