Donald Trump has announced a new policy initiative, removing income tax from overtime pay
Probably the most progressive tax proposal from either party in a generation

I think its going to turn a lot of heads on undecided moderates and strip votes away from blue collars still leaning Kamala
This is a pretty big game changer and what's Kamala supposed to do, just copy it 1:1 like she did the no tax on tips?

Biden and Harris tried to appeal just to their base with the bailout for student loans. And Trump counters by pointing out they could never get it through congress and executive actions were unconstitutional for trying to usurp the power of the purse but so what, nobody cares on a debate stage. But now that cuts both ways. If Kamala tries to counter Trump can't cut taxes as a president, he can say he actually can get it through congress. And honestly... he might. Republicans would classically oppose this, and Trump would drag them along, and a bipartisan compromise could be achieved. Whereas if Harris had proposed it, it would face the same wall as the immigration bill.

This is a new policy I've not seen anyone else with this.

The big question is how big of a budget hole this would cause, because Trump surely doesn't want to balance it with tax hikes at some other place.

It is fundamentally a good idea, though. Not only because it is a progressive tax policy which disproportionately benefits those who work hard yet have a low income - it is also a great idea from a macroeconomic perspective. One key challenge for future growth is the aging of society as well as the increasing preference of many folks for a strong work-life balance. A policy which incentivizes those who are able and willing to work more to actually do so is great for the economy.

Just reduce spending elsewhere (won’t happen but yeah that’s what normal situations would call for)

No Tax on Overtime is a massive incentive for hard working Americans.

The current math is something like 10 hours of overtime you're not totally butchered in taxes.
Past that the government taxes like 40% of it.

This could really help a large portion of families in America.

Pretty interesting proposal.

I'm all for some of these proposals which would obviously help working people/increase productivity. One thing that's at the back of my mind though, if tax receipts fall, and there are no spending cuts, our deficits are going to smash through to the moon and be on their way to the sun. Personally, think these policies need to be matched on a dollar per dollar basis with certain spending cuts. Idk if that comes from downsizing government jobs/departments, military or entitlements, but it's the right thing to do.

The Pentagon budget could probably be reduced by at least $100 billion per year without losing anything, simply by cutting down on bloat and waste.
