Overall, the firearm homicide rate in our society has decreased throughout history trends based on data, but the media will try to say otherwise.
It's interesting how people can skew data, look at this chart from a gun control source.

However, suicides hold the majority of deaths. And, they specifically chose to use the year 1999.
But if you look at the larger scale statistics. Firearm homicide had actually decreased.
Notice how these also use "per 100,000" people. Versus using total concrete numbers as a total, as, the population will increase and when a population increases other numbers will as well. It's better data.

--trying to find sources such as those from the FBI, and with very most recent years, but not having much luck and not looking to put a ton more effort into this. Looked at it before in the past during some "rifle ban debate".
If anybody else has data for any side of things feel free to chip in.
