he got dragged into the political fight where he should have remained politically neutral - this was his main mistake and it cost him his job.

btw, just for the record, I think that democrats were so angry at him after the 11th hour letter that a president Clinton would have removed him from his office as well. she would just have done it in a much smarter, smoother way.
anyway, we shouldnt forget that democrats hated this guy's guts before trump fired him and he became a hero of the #resistance.
