If you watch the video Cambo posted, you notice how that schools colors were black? If his school colors were blue, and he wore the same body paintings, it wouldn't be questioned. This was in 2012.
Regardless. I think it was a dumb decision to paint your face black in this era, because it can be misinterpreted like this and based on what has happened in history, you will offend someone. And, I get why people are offended by that.
