Whataboutism is the most bullshit thing I've ever heard as a scientist and an economist. Things are either right or wrong and to a degree of intensity. Things that aren't related cant be compared.

Leftists never mention whataboutism when it hurts their precious narrative.

whataboutism is a term that's been popularized specifically because of the Trump supporters saying "but but but Obama" in response to "what Trump is doing it unprecedented", when it isn't.

imo leftists haven't had much of a chance yet to be hypocritical on the whataboutism. it wasn't really a thing in the Obama-Bush transition of power. it was there, somewhat, but the buzzword term wasn't, and by any metric it was far less prevalent than today. memes have changed the game, people are condensing their arguments to whatever fits on a single pane picture.

it is important, however, to put criticism into perspective. it's simply a fact that a lot of the criticism towards Trump is unfair, and that the media was a lot more friendly towards Obama.

when someone starts a discussion with "here's argument XY against Trump", it is very well a valid question to ask "is this criticism justified, or is it hyperbolic or hypocritical?"

some actual Trump cultists consider any and all criticism of their god-emperor as unjustified, yes. but this neither invalidates the desire to put criticism into perspective and to scrutinize its legitimacy, nor does it make anyone a "cultist" who refuses to swallow anything the media throws towards trump at face value.
