Degeneration of the public debate is a trend here in parliament too. Over here it started with Geert Wilders' PVV. It has only worsened over time, with new parties like the pro-Turkey DENK and the alt-right FvD entering parliament. Luckily our Speaker of our House of Representatives, Khadija Arib, is incredibly competent at shutting them down if needed.
I'm fairly convinced that the internet and social media have played a significant role in reducing the quality of public debate. Shorter, more bite-sized yells are preferred over nuanced opinion, especially in publicized debates. Attention spans seem to have decreased quite a lot, among all age groups.
just compare trump's public statements, tweets, and speeches with those of his predecessors - cultists have no leg to stand on when it comes to criticising the tone of ANYONE in politics, their emperor is disgracing the highest office in the nation on a daily basis and they couldn't care less...
