the best part:

"A post mortem examination gave the young mum's cause of death as a single stab wound.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has been bailed to return in mid-January."

We used to call that NATO

NATO is just a relationship between the US and its satellite states. We get protection from Uncle Sam, and we accept submission in return. With the potential our continent holds, we do not need to trade our independence for protection.

I'm all in for strong cooperation between Europe and the US... we've always been good friends and that shouldn't change... but we must cooperate as equals.

Relying on a country that doesn't believe in free health care, social programs, strong environmental protection, regulated capitalism, etc, is a threat for our European principles and way of life in the long run.

you cant even bring all interests together now as it is, i dont see how more of what isnt working will help us
right now the EU member states are drifting away from each other

the cultures, attitudes etc in europe are way too different to be able to make politics for the whole lot

Mediterranean culture is obviously no the same as Scandinavian, and calvinists have strong differences to slavs. However, there are greater cultural differences between people living in Moscow and people living in Vladivostok or Yakutsk. There were even greater cultural differences in the USSR. China is also a hugely diverse country. We need a strong, brave (willing to fight for the people's interests) and inspirational leader that can bring us together, extolling our greco-roman heritage, our economic and social achievents and the common points of our diverse culture.

the point is that a joint, european policy should only apply to those fields where our interests and philosophies are mostly aligned. (e.g. trade, military.)
on the flip side, it is a recipe for disaster to force a joint position in areas where interests and views diverge a lot. (e.g. fiscal policy, immigration.)

that authoritarian states like the soviet union and china were able to press even more diverse people and cultures together doesnt really offer a blueprint for a peaceful, prosperous and unified europe.

exactly

thats why these countries are authoritarian to somehow keep them together or they would collapse within a week, especially russia
our model of democracy is only possible in a homogeneous society
why would the people of europe trade their national states for what would be a poor mans soviet union 2.0?

They care nothing about the wellbeing of the people. They want to win elections and nothing else.

That's what I really cant understand: the fact that the mainstream politicians and elites are still politically competitive, sometimes even winning electons, despite this utter disregard for the safety and the future demographic, economic and cultural outlook of their constituents. Why so many people are so stupid and still havent punished them a lot harder at the ballot for their failure is really beyond me.

Because only property owners should vote. The bell curve allows riffraff to vote.

But it is actually the lower 40-80% of the population who suffers the most from things like inflation, a choked off economy, shipping jobs overseas, poverty immigration, bad public education, a crumbling infrastructure, increasing crime and so on.
