Trump's tweets matter, but then they don't. He is saying one thing, but he really means another. He may be telling lies, but he is speaking truth to how people feel.

Trump has successfully blurred the lines between fact and fiction and twisted the English language, separating words from meaning. He lies so much that it's not even a news story anymore when he does. His supporters on this very site admit he lies but justify it by saying it is an means to an end. He invokes conspiracy about Democrats paying for the migrant caravan, and people don't even bat an eye. He promises tax cuts for the middle class by November, but no one cares or remembers when it doesn't happen. And our media just doesn't know how to keep up.

other politicians are lying and twisting the english language all the time as well. Trump is just too brash and blatant with it, while career politicians can cover their lies up.

I think that's a bit of a false equivalency when you consider the sheer amount of lies Trump is producing. Sure, other politicians lie and are dishonest, but first: all lies by public officials should be unacceptable, and second: the quantity and significance of lies should matter. A person shouldn't be considered a liar or not a liar. I think it is fair to say that all humans lie. But we should take into account the frequency in which a person lies.

fair enough. but i guess most people have his lies priced in by now: everyone but the core die hard cultists know that you cannot take what he says at face value.

the nice thing about trump is that his lies and the motives for the things he says are usually pretty transparent. trump might be chaotic and a notorious liar, but overall, he's easier to read than most other politicians.

edit: just so I dont get misunderstood: the fact that the motives behind his lies are pretty transparent doesnt excuse his lies or make them less damaging - it just explains why most of his supporters have been able to arrange themselves with his lies.

Trump usually does it on purpose because he knows the media will overplay their hand while giving him more coverage - which he sees as never bad.
