I agree and disagree at the same time. Yes, it does give the dems something substantive to talk about and fight against, and therefore, this topic will almost surely be a net negative for the upcoming midterms. In the long run, however, I think that talking about illegal immigration is a winning topic for the GOP and a losing one for the Democrats. Policy-wise, Trump and the GOP are simply right on the issue of birthright citizenship.
They should simply adopt a similar rule like here in Germany: a newborn is granted citizenship if either his parents have citizenship, or if his parents have been living in the country
legally and
without a criminal record for at least 8 years and are in possession of an ulimited residence permit.
this way, jus soli can be upheld for every law-abiding resident who is in the country legally, but citizenship is no longer handed out to chinese or arab "birth tourists", or to the offspring of illegal immigrants.
