we really should start differentiating between "total life expectancy" and "expected life years in good health".
geriatrics in retirement homes, or cancer patients with massive therapies, surviving longer has been pushing the total life expectancy in western societies up in recent decades, but it is debatable if extending the amount of time people survive in a miserable condition is actually a good thing. in some cases it might be, but there surely are a lot of cases where it doesnt make sense, and only harms the patients and the taxpayers - with no one but the health and nursing industry profiting from it.
I tend to agree, ive seen quite a few people languish in nursing homes from my family and its always a bad situation.
on a side note, its funny how sauci will share anything he thinks makes the US look bad. the category from the Drug OD's that is actually noteworthy is the Fentanyl category which only looks noteworthy due to it not existing for the public prior to it skyrocketing.
