Meth? Not really. They all act like they are casual, while their face is sunk in and they have sores. I seen a patient that was a meth user today and brought my intern with me...then told her that the patient and myself were the same age....just to show the power of meth.
I deal with A LOT of IV drug users at the hospital.
In particular, I deal with many who won't' let us draw their blood for fear of us ruining their veins.
Sometimes we have to wait for their infection to get so bad they get transferred to the ICU after they lose consciousness before we can get a blood culture and begin adequate treatment.
The consequences of us potentially using the wrong, or insufficient antibiotic is plainly spelled out to them several times, but they would rather risk their lives than not be able to use after they leave.
