well for one they live on an island continent with very geographically isolated population centers that got almost no infections until just a few months ago, so they were almost completely unaffected for the middle phase of the pandemic where americans were dropping like flies. They didn't have the same mass international travel, land borders and dispersed population across huge number of cities that let it ping pong across the US in an uncontrollable manner.
for two, they have significantly lower rates of comorbidities. 7% rate of CHD in america, versus 4.8% in australia. 10.5% rate of diabetes in the US, versus 4.9% in australia. COPD, sickle cell anemia, etc etc
