WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort will cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of Russian election meddling as part of a plea deal, prosecutors told a federal court in Washington on Friday.

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort arrives for arraignment on a third superseding indictment against him by Special Counsel Robert Mueller on charges of witness tampering, at U.S. District Court in Washington, U.S. June 15, 2018.

Manafort, 69, also pleaded guilty to two criminal counts, becoming the most prominent former Trump campaign official to plead guilty in Mueller’s investigation.

The probe has cast a shadow over the Republican’s presidency and Manafort’s decision to cooperate deals a setback to Trump ahead of congressional elections on Nov. 6.

A longtime Republican operative, Manafort made millions of dollars working for pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians before taking an unpaid position with Trump’s campaign for five months.

He led the campaign in mid-2016 when Trump was selected as the Republican presidential nominee at the party convention.

Moscow has denied interfering in the 2016 election and Trump has said there was no collusion.

Manafort on Friday pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice brought by Mueller’s team.

U.S. House Democratic leader says NAFTA should remain trilateral

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on Friday warned the Trump administration that the NAFTA trade agreement should be maintained as a trilateral pact between the United States, Mexico and Canada and not just a U.S.-Mexico arrangement.

Whatever deal ultimately is reached in negotiations will be reviewed by the next Congress that convenes in January. Pelosi could be the speaker of the House if Democrats win this November’s congressional midterm elections.

The House speaker sets the legislative agenda and often has the political muscle to assure passage or defeat of initiatives.

“I think it should be trilateral,” Pelosi told reporters, adding that she did not think it would be “in the interest of this hemisphere” to turn the North American Free Trade Agreement into a bilateral deal.

A revamped trade agreement with Mexico has been negotiated and U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Ottawa that he is prepared to leave Canada out of the arrangement if it fails to accept terms more favorable to the United States.

Speaking at a news conference that mainly centered on hurricane devastation wreaked in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands last year, Pelosi said she was seeking more details on the results of the U.S.-Mexico negotiations.

She said that earlier on Friday she had instructed aides to set up briefings for rank-and-file lawmakers.

“Any arrangement of that kind, of that length of being in effect should be subjected to some scrutiny I think,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi added that Democrats want to see more progress toward raising U.S. wages and cautioned: “You don’t lift wages in the United States by suppressing them other places. So we’re concerned about the ability of Mexican workers to organize and improve their economic status as well.”

I think Pelosi has gotten senile. Yes, we shouldn't try to hurt Mexico in any way, but "concern" about Mexico's workers to improve their economic status, should be a concern of Mexico, and NOT of the Democrats.
I think someone needs to remind Pelosi at least, which country she works for.

are you that dense? if Mexico had better "economic status" like Pelosi is referring to, they probably wouldn't be so eager to illegally cross the border into the U.S... or do you want more brown people in the U.S.? because that's what it sounds like...

i'm split about this:

Quote (SLATE)
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis “is now expected to be dismissed or to resign after the midterm elections,” Politico reported Thursday.

how about they stay in their own country and improve it to the point where they can earn decent wages and dont have to resort to a race to the bottom (in terms of wages) to attract jobs from other countries?

Mattis is one of the few good ones around the President

I'll view it as a great loss if it happens

many of the immigrants aren't mexican, or are from cartel infested areas. Honduras and Venezualans are fairly common from what i read.

but this whole "poor migrants should improve their own country" is just "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" talk with a new hat. how does someone who makes 20 cents a day, saves up for a decade to get the coyote's fee, and has to leave children and family behind to get to america to make more money to send home to their family they left, "improve their country"? these are poor uneducated manual laborers in a poor area economically. obviously there are some ways they can improve some things, but to present it as an alternative to individuals migrating? that's dumb as hell. and to be honest sneaking into the US and sending back money with Western Union is likely a better strategy financially than whatever you're about to respond with.

nothing Pelosi said was wrong there, she FIRST stated she wants more progress in raising U.S. wages (are you against that? no, I don't think so), then secondly, she said she is concerned with the Mexican economy, what is wrong about that? she clearly prioritized U.S. wages, Mexico is a direct neighbor, we would be silly to just ignore them (Canada too).

i'm leaning towards that as well, but part of me likes to see the good guys (like Mattis) not be complicit in Trumps corrupt White House, hence why I'm somewhat split. It goes back to the op-ed debate whether you think the "enablers" should resign or perpetuate the "steady state"
