well, during the 2016 campaign, everyone was belittling him and giving him no chance with his platform - the overwhelming majority of all pundits agreed that it was a strategic mistake of him to only play to his base. he didnt listen to them and "miraculously" pulled off the victory.
after his inauguration, all pundits agreed that he would be doomed and steadily lose support if he only appealed to his base and didnt reach out to the moderate swing voters. he didnt listen, kept playing to his base and only his base - and his approval ratings stabilized at a not great but acceptable level, while his position of power within the republican party improved.
I cant blame him for sticking with his strategy, the strategy which won him the white house and which so far has worked out... no great, but fine.
I want to make sure we're talking about the same thing. I'm calling Trump a fool because posting some dramatic photoshopped picture(which looks like a movie poster) on twitter as POTUS is foolish.
Of course, anything foolish Trump does will be defended and/or cheered by his base, but it's not like they aren't going to show up to the polls if he doesn't post that picture, or doesn't attack Paul Ryan on twitter.
So I think you're conflating Trump's foolish antics with his actual policy goals and actions. Trump sending the military to the border is something that could potentially be judged harshly by history, but it's not an example of him acting like an unpresidential jackass. His base won't leave him if he tones down the jackassness(and it would move others to him), but they would get mildly upset if he moved to the left on immigration.
