I agree with y'all. There are Conservatives who dislike or even despise Trump, but are willing to sell their soul for some tax breaks and federal judges. I've seen it, too, and I think it's pathetic.

I think it is perhaps worse than being in the "Trump cult" in so far as they essentially recognize that he is a demagogue who is destroying democratic institutions but put up with it for temporary political gains.

I think the "Trump enablers" are a larger group than the "Trump cult" among Republicans. But as I mentioned earlier, the distinction is slowly losing its meaning, at least in terms of being 'functionally' Conservative.

There's ideological differences as well. The great majority of conservative thinkers in the media aren't on board with Trump's stance on trade.

I think the key issue here is less the political gains trump enables, it's the huge political losses to the liberal side that trump is preventing. Many conservatives probably dont like it, but right now, Trump is the only thing standing between them and complete and utter defeat on virtually every issue. That's why I've been saying for over 2 years now that Trump is the result and not the cause of hyperpolarization.

the proportion is so incomparably more that the point is uttered moot.

I know Ben shaprio likes to talk 5 times a week about how Trump is what happens when you treat McCain and Romney (center right guys) like hyperpartisans, and then ties the point to how you can't trust the media because they are "treating Trump just like they did those guys", but Ben's wrong on that. Not from a literal standpoint, but by proportion. A few media outlets treated a few center right guys unfairly during a political campaign, all the outlets are treating Trump unfairly out of a campaign. It's not the same thing, Trump would agree with the logic, it's how he's seeking "forgiveness" from Ted Cruz, "campaign talk" etc.

It's really just a case of confirmation bias with anecdotes, the media hasn't been even close to as "unfair" to republican leaders as they are right now. we're in a truly unprecedented time, the anecdotes are nothing but light foreshadowing, as compared to more of the same.

I was referring to Alex's argument that conservatives who stay by trumps side despite realizing how much he's hurting democratic institutions are "selling their soul for some tax cuts and federal judges". My argument is that they are "selling their soul" (which is a claim that could be debated on its own) to prevent the entire liberal agenda from marching to a comprehensive victory on every front.
