I haven't brushed up on my presidential history in a while... why was Andrew Jackson a great president?

Greatest warrior of the entire line. He acted unilaterally to annex Florida. Smashed the British more times than anyone. Prevented the Civil War happening on his watch during the Nullification Crisis; Lincoln wasn't as successful. He founded that greatest political party in American History, which produced the presidents who've won every major American war and who have been most successful in governing toward economic success time and time again. Destroyed the Bank of the United States. He has the ability to lead men no matter where they were from, and was able to raise armies of slaves, Indians, farmers, settlers, hill people, etc, etc, to defeat formal military forces...plus individually he was probably the biggest badass to live in the White House.

Bold is nothing to be proud of.

@ blue: How do you reconcile this with your love of the Federal Reserve bank?

Then there was the Trail of Tears. Good job, Andy!

You think the trail of tears was bad for the US?

Yes, just like slavery was a black eye too. I don't imagine you'd tell me slavery was good for the US.

Not really sure. It certainly helped the south out economically at the time, but then it was also a factor in the civil war which was obviously a negative.

As far as I'm aware slaves were not considered Americans at the time.

And lets get something clear, I'm not saying I support slavery or think it is morally correct.

But back to the original topic..

Moving the Indians, while morally wrong, gained us massive amounts of land and resources, and was a net benefit for America

Well to be fair the blacks weren't really people until we made them people, so their suffering while slaves is only 3/5ths as bad.
