i had this same conversation a week or so ago. it's a trade off.

if you have the EC states like Montana or North Dakota can and should vote, they get EC votes even if they're small in number.

if you have popular vote they shouldn't bother, by and large, as their entire population is 1/4 of just LA county.

North Dakota has 700kish people, Montana 1m, LA has 4m.

so you trade the minority votes in a non-battle ground state for entire states. you also then eliminate representation for the norms there. I feel for southern minority populations in deep red states, i feel for conservatives in deeply blue states, but i also dont want entire states invalidated.

Use a weighted average in deciding electoral votes and allow them to be fractional.

The big issue I see with moving to a national popular vote is that it would shift the campaign focus completely to the big urban metros. Yes, you would suddenly have both nominees holding rallies in San Francisco, Dallas, Seattle or Boston - but at the same time, the exurbs and rural regions would receive even less attention than they do now. Would the campaigns really bother making a stop in Ohio or Iowa anymore?

Btw, LA county has a population of 10 million, not 4.8 :P

correct i googled "pop of LA" instead of "pop of LA county". still insane to see either contrasted with ND's pop.

Say a state has 10 electoral votes and goes 60% republican 40% democrat, the electoral votes would be 6 for the republican candidate and 4 for the democrat. In reality it would be say 6.34, 3.66 so allow that.

Yea I agree something like this. Tracking % or vs populations of 1mil or something. I’m guessing and don’t know the answer but there has to be better than what’s going.

I know i'll take some flack but honestly in a 2 party system the best system is one where each party wins about 50% of the time, and something like the senate fluctuates from 40% to 60% control for each party.

if we could end the 2 party system the EC would need to be changed, arguably in a 2 party system it needs not to be changed.

You have it backwards though. We have a 2 party system because of how we vote.

and we have chickens because of eggs.

until we find a way to break the cycle the cycle remains.

we can change the system to more than 2 parties far easier than ratifying the constitution.

we're already doing a decent job of making 2 into 4 with radical and moderate wings of our left/right parties. but still a lot of work to do.

The correct solution is to eliminate the concept of states (and with it the Senate, which was originally formed to represent the interests of the states) entirely, and to found a new country on this land called the Republic of America.

Of course that's what a commie wants - making it easy for the Central Committee to impose it's 5-year plans on the entire country without leaving those pesky kulaks and petty burgeois any chance to resist.
