To a certain extent, I agree. Sometimes tough decisions have to be made. Trump could be seen as an ugly ends to a mean in that sense. As you said a few days ago, a productive President with terrible optics.
But to the extent Trump takes it, no. Not only did he endorse a man who sexually assaulted a 14 year old, he also drew a false equivalency between white nationalists and people protesting white nationalists, compared our country to a ruthless autocracy, is slowly eroding our democratic institutions, exacerbated partisanship, and is lowering the level of national discourse to embarrassing levels.
Instead of talking about how to solve American health care, we are fighting about the implications of our President paying off a pornstar.
As Colin Powell said, Trump is a national disgrace. I know I probably won't convince you of that, but just consider for a moment that this guy launched his 2012 political campaign on the basis that Obama was not a US citizen. I think that should speak for itself.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Tweets and the rallies are fun to watch. He's engaging, funny, and captivating. But the man is a demagogue, plain and simple. He appeals to the worst parts of our humanity.
I write this to you only because I know you are a fair and reasonable individual, and I respect you. Your support of Trump will never change that. But believe me, there are far better ways to help this great nation succeed than to support Donald Trump, even if you like some his policies.
That's the issue though: it's not just about me liking some of Trump's policies, it's also about me considering a ton of the policies of the current Democrats to be a disaster if enacted.
The choice is not between Trumpism, with all it's ups and downs, and some generic, reliable, "replacement level" Republican like Pence or Pat Toomey who wouldnt do much of anything. No, the choice is between Trumpism and a party that is quickly lurching towards "democratic socialism", an overabundance of anti-male, anti-white identity politics, censorship disguised as weaponized political correctness, and a completely naive outlook on foreign policy and geostrategy.
There are no moderate parties or politicians left to choose from - bold and simple, it's either Trump or Ocasio-Cortez. Yes, I know, Ocasio-Cortez is currently on the left-most fringe of the Democratic party, but as many pundits have pointed out, she quite clearly embodies the future of the (current) democratic coalition and their policy preferences. By the end of a hypothetical term of a President Harris or Gillibrand, her ideas would have become Democratic mainstream. The only way to stop the Democrats from going further in this direction, which I consider disastrous, is for them to get electorally bitchslapped back to their senses by the voters.
Democrats need to become a viable alternative again, and with how things are right now, for this to happen, we have no choice but to endure Trumpism a little longer. Yes, I know, I know... saying this is rather easy for me, a guy who actually likes quite some of Trump's policies, but I simply see the country in a crossroads-kind-of-moment where it is more important that the "right" team wins than it is to maintain the teams' purity/integrity. I agree that Trump is damaging the democratic culture of the country, and that things cant go on like this for another 6 years without causing some irreparable damage. But for the reasons explained in this post, Trump and Trumpism are still the lesser of two evils in my eyes, at least
for now.
