Inbreeding is a cultural thing in the Middle East, it doesn't have a lot to do with religion. Syrian Christians will have a high rate of inbreeding too.

islam has a lot to do with the culture of the middle east, christian or not. Islam is far more than a religion.

In this case Islam does support inbreeding though and I think the Christians Syrians practice it out of cultural reasons brought on by Islam

Inbreeding in the Middle East isn't part of islamic culture though. Marrying cousins has been popular in the region since the days of Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Ancient Persia, etc. It's also popular in other non-muslim regions like India or some parts of SE Asia. Muhammad married his cousin because it was the normal thing to do in the region (and pretty much everywhere else, because it was seen as a form of keeping the a family's blood pure in most cultures/traditions), he didn't start any trends. Of course, because of this Islam is likely to never speak against first cousin marriage, but saying it encourages that behaviour is a lie... Muhammad had around a dozen wives, and he wasn't related to most of them.

iirc the reason it stopped being a common practice in the western world is because during the early Dark Ages political marriages among small feudal rulers and noble houses had to be encouraged, resulting in the Pope outlawing it.
