In most situations, the only damage done by giving false hope is that there will be a letdown later on. But in this situation, false hope is really harmful. Spinning a narrative that downplays the threat is exactly what's causing asymptomatic people to go out in public and spread the virus to others. Spreading false hope is like spraying a crowd with bullets.

Trump never called the Coronavirus a hoax, and in fact there was over a minute of speech inbetween Trump saying 'coronavirus' and 'hoax', the latter which clearly referred to Democrat's efforts to politicize the issue.
