Italy Passes Tough Immigration Law: 'The Good Times (For Migrants) Are Over'

The Italian government passed a law that clamps down on asylum rights and boosts funds for police, handing Interior Minister and right-wing League party leader Matteo Salvini his first major legislative win.

The lower house of parliament voted 396 to 99 late on Wednesday to pass the law championed by Salvini, who took office in June in a coalition with the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement.

The new law eliminates humanitarian grounds for granting protection to refugees — asylum that is not tied to political persecution or war. It also funnels millions of euros to law enforcement and anti-mafia administrators.

“I’m willing to host women and children who are escaping from war ... But all the others, no,” Salvini said on Thursday, referring to the new legislation. “I don’t want to be seen as an idiot.”

Italy will still award asylum to war refugees or victims of political persecution. But it will no longer hand out “humanitarian” asylum, which was given to those who had “serious reasons” to flee their home country - a category that has often included homosexuals fleeing harsh anti-gay laws in Africa.

More than 20,000 people, or 25 percent of those who sought asylum, got “humanitarian” protection last year, and the tens of thousands of others received it in previous years will now likely lose their legal status when their documents expire.

The League’s lawmakers celebrated the passage of the law on Thursday by unfurling a banner outside the lower house of parliament that read: “The Salvini decree is law; the good times (for migrants) are over.”

The law also allows for migrants to be stripped of their citizenship if they're convicted of terrorism.

Parliament erupted in cheers after the law was passed:

"The moment the security and Immigration decree became law!" Salvini tweeted. "I dedicate this applause and this enthusiasm to all of you, my friends, who have always believed in me. And it's just the beginning."

Salvini also refused to sign onto the UN migration pact, like the Swiss.

Of course immigration is not the only problem, but is IS the most pressing one. This kind of immigration that Europe has seen over the last couple of years is threatening our security, our wealth, our culture, our way of living. Solving any other problem will be moot if this kind of immigration is allowed to rage on. It is the issue that HAS to be solved first before it even makes sense to turn back to all the other problems.

you just cant compare the commute in the tiny, densely populated Netherlands with that in the huge and empty France.

And yet we have the same type of policies to compensate for commuting costs. Governments like investing in ppl living far away from work, densely populated or not.

its not fake, how do you get that idea? millions of germans, me included, just received letters that electricity will become more expensive AGAIN
depending on area there are increases ~ 10% for 2019

The article is focussing on the drop in electricity price in feb 2016 on long term electricity contracts for corporations, mainly relating the increase after it, to increasing coal/oil/gas prices. Adding up an "unquantifyable hedge fund investors" increase coming in. Not ever does it mention middle incomes apart from the header, making me wary of the narative the article goes for. It's almost like the energy market is lobbying for buying long term contracts. Making me wonder who sends letters nowadays, warning about increasing energyprices for households. Annd, that takes us back to energy prices for the middle income household:

well, what the chart shows is that prices rose by 6ct/kwh from 2009 to 2018, while the price for buying the coal/oil/gas went down by 2.5ct/kwh. the increased grid fees are mostly due to the strain that volatile solar and wind energy is putting on our grid. so the renewable surcharge and the related grid fees have raised our power prices during the current economic circle by almost 8c, or 27%. not quite the 100% increase ampoo was talking about, but still sizable.

i added in the reply to fender that i didnt claim that electricity prices have doubled for the regular household
however on the energy market they have, which results in massive increases for everyone

do you really want to blame corporations for needing security to plan production for the next years?

btw, you do realise its the local energy suppliers sending letters to their customers to inform them about the new prices? who else?
is that so hard

see above for clarification
by all rights the prices should go down, but thanks to borderline socialist policy we dont have a free market anymore

and things will be getting so much worse
