Every day as more horrific facts roll in, the news keeps trying to smooth them over by twisting the data to make it sound less bad. At this rate, people will never get the message so they won't react properly and the facts will keep getting worse.

When we pass the 3,000 deaths from 9/11 will that be enough? Or no because we don't have that jarring visual of exploding towers to get the message across?

tl;dr its not accurate

Even the common flu creates an excess mortality north of 3000 in almost every year without anyone caring, so that number obviously doesnt carry much symbolic value for a disease.
(Just to make this clear: The coronavirus is a lot worse than the common flu; I'm not supporting the false talking points from two weeks ago.)

About 10 days from now, there will be a day when 3k people die in a single day, matching 9/11. Will that be enough? By then it will be too late, we will have already locked in our path toward the less optimistic end of the projections (10million) rather than the more optimistic outcome (3million)

3k per day die from automobile accidents.

and 3k will die per day from suicide if the economy remains halted.
