Wishful thinking. At the very least a devastating conventional strike on Russian forces in Ukraine would occur.
I agree that the US would want to avoid Armageddon, but there is no scenario where Russia gets a free swing with a tactical nuke anywhere on the European continent.
Besides the risk to reward ratio is not advantageous for Russia. The potential for a miscalculation/ spillover into eastern NATO countries is too high.
Ukraine isn't a NATO member. Russian troops are Russian.
If Russia nukes Ukraine, they aren't nuking NATO. If NATO nukes Russians, they are starting World War 3 and triggering mutually assured destruction.
If Russia nukes Ukraine, NATO isn't obligated to nuke Russia in response. If NATO nukes Russians, Russia will nuke NATO. And they have enough nukes to destroy all of America and Europe at the same time.
The potential for a miscalculation/spillover is certainly high, and that's what keeps Russia from using nukes
right now. What we're watching is NATO escalate the war to the point where Russia will have a rational course to use nukes, because the existential threat of a heavily armed NATO proxy invasion outweighs the risks of using nukes. This isn't hard to understand. We're finding every red line and crossing it, finding every way to accelerate and escalate this conflict until Russia will have no recourse other than to use nuclear weapons. And once we reach that threshold, we'll be gambling with the fate of civilization.
