Not a "specific direction," motion in relation to one or more points of reference. This is super simple: an aircraft flying 500 mph as measured by airspeed into a 50 mph headwind will achieve a 450 mph overland speed (speed relative to the ground) while still travelling 500 mph (speed relative to the enveloping air mass). Simultaneously, while flying 500 mph in a line perpendicular to the advance of the orbit (a speed you liken to 66,000 mph) means that aircraft is moving 500 mph relative to the orbital plane, and 66,000 mph relative to the sun. However, simply changing the direction of your 500 kn air speed into the direction of the advance of the orbit (airspeed unchanged) can mean your speed relative to the sun is now 66,500.
