Yes these sentences are harsh, but imagine how harsh an illegitimate government would be, an authoritarian one, with the american style / way of life aberration. Top notch.
This is what they tried to do. Technically this always lead to harsh sentences, so don't be surprised.
Didn't say the actual U.S constitution is a miracle, but what they did was a direct path to something that people... Usually regret.
