I still don't get how Trump can say he's going to do {thing} for {reason}, and he goes out and does {thing} exactly like he says he would while explaining {reason}, and then op-eds will insist he's really got a completely different reason.
He can play 1D checkers and they'll pretend its a Xanatos gambit. It doesn't mean he's wrong if he's doing a blunt strategy, but they don't need to see feints and gambits where he's just doing what he says right on the tin.

He said he's going to use tariffs as a bludgeon with the force of our trade deficits to ensure it hurts them more than it hurts us, and his goal is to get fair trade, preferably free but able to live on a walled off island if we have to. The Chinese can be perfectly aware of his strategy and still powerless to stop it, look at the trends in Asian stocks vs Wall Street today.
