Thing is, the barrier needs to be proportional or smaller than the problem it would prevent.
Since requiring an ID only prevents in-person voter ID, which is a small fraction of an already miniscule pool of illegal votes, that means that virtually any barrier crosses the line.
Is it worth an extra barrier to stop an amount of illegally cast votes that will never affect an election even in the smallest town? Hard to make an argument that it is.
As for the more specific issue of discrimination, any barrier is inherently discrminatory if it requires time or travel to overcome since certain demographics lack transportation money and time at different rates. The question then becomes is the discrimination worth it to solve a problem? Since the problem is so small the barrier again needs to be incredibly small to be justified.
In Wisconsin, for example, you can get a FREE photo ID. And if even that is too difficult you can even get a temp ID (free) that's good for 180 days.
Point still is, there is absolutely no reason not to have voter ID laws, and to assume they discriminate, is to assume everyone who HAS voter ID is an idiot.
/e The REAL reason some ppl are against voter ID is that they are say... a criminal, an illegal alien, or just plain planning to cast more than one vote.
