Why would GOP run a guy who lost by seven million votes to the current guy?
Because Trump brings out voters that other, "non-trumpy" Republicans cannot. Whether the concept of DeSantis to run as the "trumpism without Trump" candidate works out in the end is an open question. I, personally, believe that the answer is yes, but would the RNC really want to risk an election on this conjecture?
Also, the major reason Trump lost in 2020 is that he drove away a key segment of swing voters and supercharged not just his own side's turnout, but also that of the Dem base. Without his daily tweets and the pervasive Trump show on every media channel, his chances of winning a rematch against Biden should be better. A bit similar to how he managed to come from behind and win the finish in 2016: his advisors took away his cellphone so that he stopped tweeting stupid shit all the time. He focused on his rallies and gave the media the room to focus on Hillary's emails once again.
So, that's the logic for the GOP to run Trump again. There are of course other, imho more presuasive arguments why another Trump candidacy would be a disaster. For example, Republicans cannot win if the Dem base is fully energized. Biden or Kamala surely won't manage to do that, but a Trump redux might.
