Instead of tyranny of the majority we have tyranny of the Swing States
the extended list of swing states currently represent a healthy mix of the diversity/variety of the country:
you have states which are dominated by large urban centers like georgia, arizona, pennsylvania, colorado, nevada or minnesota, you have rural, more decentralized states like ohio, iowa, new hampshire, wisconsin or north carolina.
you have states which are dominated by a professional and well-educated electorate like colorado and virginia, but also ones which are dominated by working class voters like nevada and ohio.
you have southern states in which latinos are a large voting block, like arizona, florida or nevada, ones with blacks as a strong voting block like georgia, michigan and north carolina, and ones which are dominated by white voters like ohio, wisconsin or new hampshire.
you have strongly polarized swing states like pennsylvania, north carolina and georgia, but also ones with a rather homogeneous and moderate electorate like new hampshire, ohio, michigan and colorado.
you have continental swing states like arizona, colorado, wisconsin or ohio, and coastal ones like florida, north carolina and virginia.
things could be very bad in terms of representation (in the sense of "a presidential candidate must be able to do well with this type of voters to have a chance"), but they are fairly balanced at the moment. particularly when arizona and georgia come into play more during the next cycle (due to demographic change), or the one after that.
