I think you should also look at the shrinking pool of Catholics.

Lots of Catholics are leaving the religion in first world countries, so you've got the conservative group staying, and the liberal group just leaving the religion, so it looks like Catholics are trending conservative when in reality the same group polled would have been the same.

Catholics nationwide must be really different than the one's i grew up around. you're clearly right by the stats i just looked up, its shocking to me considering my life's perspective.

i still think its a bit funny how direly many Christians view the "war on religion". it started off with Happy Holidays cups at Starbucks and once a gay wedding cake had to be made (yes yes i know the gay guys were opportunist fucks) all hell broke loose. when i take a good macro lens look at attacks on Christians i find it to be pretty benign honestly. i think the shift is as much caused by GOP rhetoric fanning flames (if not more honestly) than actual DNC policy and actions. hell, a bunch are probably scared because the DNC allows Muslims in the party.... ive heard people ask honestly how a Muslim can be allowed in congress if they dont swear on a bible. that type of ignorance makes me think Christianity needs a knock on the chin so people can understand what freedom of religion actually means. most only seem in freedom of Christianity.

it's probably your regional location. plenty of democrat-voting catholics in my parts. also JFK was a catholic, plenty of catholics voted for him
