It appears that Ecuador is about to hand over Julian Assange to the UK. The proximate cause for the change seems to be anger over Assange's condemnation of the Spanish crackdown on Catalonia.

But if, as seems quite likely, the Trump administration finally announces that it intends to prosecute Assange for publishing classified U.S. Government documents, we will be faced with the bizarre spectacle of U.S. journalists – who have spent the last two years melodramatically expressing grave concern over press freedom due to insulting tweets from Donald Trump about Wolf Blitzer and Chuck Todd or his mean treatment of Jim Acosta – possibly cheering for a precedent that would be the gravest press freedom threat in decades.

That precedent would be one that could easily be used to put them in a prison cell alongside Assange for the new “crime” of publishing any documents that the U.S. Government has decreed should not be published. When it comes to press freedom threats, such an indictment would not be in the same universe as name-calling tweets by Trump directed at various TV personalities.

Send him over here, Trump would probably give him a cabinet position.

did anyone really buy the "cohen paid stormy out of his own pocket without being tasked or reimbursed by trump"-spin?

most people simply dont care which porn stars trump was fucking over a decade ago. does it make the religious right look like hypocrites? for sure. but everyone knows that trump is the closest thing they'll get to enacting their policy agenda. trump is the only thing standing between them and ultimate defeat on every policy front.

I'm not even getting into all that. I know most don't actually care and that's not why they voted for him. Like EndlessSky said, they knew he had garbage morals going in, so I'm not even getting into the religious hypocrisy stuff.

My point is this: A significant portion of Trump supporters denied the payment and relationship even happened. Now it looks like we have some proof. Instead of acknowledging they were incorrect, they are jumping a step to "who cares."

well, thats my point: I dont think there were that many trump supporters who denied the affair, and only slightly more who denied the hush money. everyone knew that Cohen had paid stormy off, where did they think the money came from?

I mean... there are braindead diehard trump apologists who deny even his most obvious wrongdoings. but those are NOT the norm, even if the other side likes to point to them and portray them as the average trump supporter, which they arent.

News has become a stream of lies passing back and forth for whoever can create a narrative first regardless of facts involved

The left didnt care about reporting the truth even when they know its wrong and they did it to sway public opinions. They forced both sides to resort to the same thing out of necessity hence our record low media trust across the board

That has been the business model of Fox News as well. I dont think we can single out one side who unambiguously is to blame for starting that whole "fake news" trend.

I think most figured the affair probably occurred but denied Trump's knowledge of the hush money. There was a lot of debate about campaign finance implications at the time, and the slimeball that is Michael Avenatti politicized the scandal such that Trump supporters reflexively called it fake news.
