Assad staying in power is a very unpleasant outcome, yet was probably still the least horrible of all available alternatives.

I consider Assad to be the lesser of two evils compared to islamistic terrorist groups like al-nusra and isis.

Preventing an in-progress invasion and liberating a people while the military are already entrenched are two completely different military scenarios and you would be delusional not to see that.

mostly yes, (/e: it's more complicated that just that), but you cant use that as an example of Russia helping the US to fight terror.

fair enough, this does not constitute direct cooperation in the fight against terrorism. but the point still stands: in syria, our interests and those of the russians coincided.

Hmm.. not really, Russia was taking the lead in coming to a resolve. While the West wanted to overthrow the dictator... In a way it's about having influence in the next government within the resource rich country.. Russia won.

Sure, but it already happened. Trump hasn't been able to expel the Russians... his cozy relationship with Putin doesn't bear fruit.
