They ostentatiously celebrated their alleged moral superiority and the fact that they met a higher standard than Trump and the right-side of the political aisle.
Trump never pretended to be a "good guy" in the sense of being a "morally flawless white knight in a shining armor". While Hillary took pride in having a clean slate, Trump took pride in being willing to sully his hands in his fight for the american people.
More generally: In my impression, Republicans havefor decades been more willing to "embrace the dark side", if you know what I mean. Trump's election is the pinnacle of this development.

I'm with IceMage on this one, I really doubt that the American public would be willing to go to war against Russia over causes like Syria or the Crimea; even if it's just a medium-scale proxy war.
Maybe if American intelligence is able to successfully reignite the hostility of the Cold War again then Americans will be more open to the idea.
