You're right he didn't. He did absolutely nothing at all. Trump said long ago, that the US govt. has decided to stop broadcasting it's intentions to enemies, on the world stage. Looks to me like that's exactly what just happened.

What exactly would Trump accomplish by yelling at and embarrassing Putin? Do you folks think that Russia is under ANY delusion, that they can overpower or out think us?
This isn't a case of street or playground rep, we are discussing here.

So why should the US, warn Putin that we are going to oppose them on every front? You're right, that would be... stooooooooopid. :/

Everyone knows that Trump confronting Putin with certain things would not have changed their minds, would not have lead to Russia changing it's course. It was entirely a political thing, it was about Trump sending a symbol that he takes the domestic concerns about Russian hacking and interfering serious. It was about Trump sending them a largely symbolic yet important message on the world stage. He didnt, and this makes him look either weak or incompetent or compromised. There's really no excuse this time around. It was a huge political blunder.

Where do politics and real influence/actions cross? The president responding forcefully, in both private and public, can deter the Russians from interfering in our elections. If the consequences(or threat of consequences) they face are worse than the damage they can inflict, it will stop.

Uhh, yeah, those two things aren't mutually exclusive. 70,000 votes. Man, you gotta step it up to keep trolling here, it's not GC.

man, you’re slow (which is why you’re a lefty voting for lefties who want activist, anti-constitutional SC picks then saying you want constitutional SC justices)

the ongoing message from the anti-Trump crowd is ‘russian hacking’ was why drumpf won the election, and yet Pres Obama said he told putin cut it out and ‘russian hacking’ diminished quite a bit in September 2016. (c)linton was up by +12 in October. drumpf wins in November. angry cia former director brennan blames putin russian hacking for election result.

Honestly, there was a kid's joke years and years ago, concerning them arguing about who's dog was bigger.
Later on in life, late high school times...it's who's dick is bigger. Then it's who has the better job or makes more money, or who is smarter.

We know we could kick Russia's ass. They know we could kick their ass.
Personally, I'd like to think that those running the US are better than the "my dog is bigger than your dog" philosophy.

Like I said earlier, the only thing that embarrassing Putin would accomplish, is to let Russia know how we really feel, or to cater to the morons, that don't know we are way the fuck up on Russia.

I also noticed that Trump isn't doing his usual tweeting about this. Wonder why? Maybe he's giving the Dems and McCain ofc, enough rope to hang themselves, before the elections.
Let them yell and scream and call treason, then after everyone knows they went insane over this... then he will explain his reasoning?

In any confrontational situation in the world, it's always the ones who let you think you're on top, that you need to worry about.

Yeah, sure it can. It worked for Obama. :/
Seriously? Talking shyt will scare Russia. Russia a super power. Maybe if Trump called Putin a wimpy country, then Russia would proceed to BE a wimpy country. :/

Assuming the white house and the entire congress came to together to really deliver a broadside against russia - which consequences could they install? Further economic sanctions would be ineffective without the Europeans on board, and it's already hard enough to keep them in line on the current sactions, which are hurting them a lot more than the US. They wouldnt accept further damage to their economies in order to retaliate a domestic cause of the americans.

Politically, the relationship between the US and russia is already very bad, and even if it gets even colder, the russians probably still wouldnt give a fuck. Diplomatically, the russians are backed by china on every front that matters. And military action is pretty much beyond debate, since the US certainly doesnt want to get more militarily involved in the middle east, and there are few other military fronts on which they could hurt the russians.

Apart from some more frozen bank accounts of oligarchs from Putin's inner circle, I dont really see how the US could inflict damage on the russians and compel them to stop stirring shit up.

So in my opinion, the most sensible approach is to close all the loopholes and security issues of the election systems all over the country, from the municipal to the federal level.

Could be. I know you'll get no argument from quite a few of the posters on PaRD.

Doesn't change the fact that yelling at Putin would serve no "useful" purpose, that I can see.
Yeah honey, let's poke the bear. That's a great idea.

As I said: it would of course not serve a purpose in actually solving the issues with Russia - but it would have served a big political purpose at home.

Honestly, and this is from watching Trump closely since about middle of 2016... I don't think Trump cares.
Trump seems to do exactly what HE thinks he should do. Every advisor he had told him to yell at Putin. Every advisor he had told him not to tweet stuff, told him not to yell at NK, told him what to do about this and that.
In case you didn't notice..he doesn't seem to care what they think. He does what HE thinks is the best.

With the way politics seems to be lately, I'm not sure that that's such a bad idea.

/e This kind of makes me think of the Truman presidency. Everyone knew he would be a wimpy president, and that they would have no trouble controlling him. Wrong on both counts.

He does what he thinks is the best - but in this case, he clearly was wrong. The way he handled today's meeting was clearly not the best for himself, politically.
