My brother in law this weekend, who is entirely without insurance, flew Medivac from one hospital to another to get necessary care. He flew to the very much private enterprise at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, where they not only stabilized him, but promised not to discharge him until they can figure out why his blood pressure dropped dangerously low (50/30). The staff there has of course been nothing short of wonderful.

Yikes...make sure you post the gofundme link in PaRD so we can help out.

Looks like Australia is at a 0.43% ratio, while the USA is at 0.17%

Santara knows his numbers :O

The australian data is from 2011 and the american data is from 2017, bit odd.

Well we have had conservatives in power for 6 years, so it makes sense.

Those rankings everyone likes to trot about have one thing in common: they include universal coverage as a significant contributor to their scoring. Infant mortality, another major component, isn't even compared fairly across nations. In reality, a child would be lucky to be born in an American hospital. When I'm not busy, I can post links. Other nations enjoy the military version of the peace dividend: they shunt massive spending into research & development onto America. It's not even close when comparing the levels of research performed in America vs the rest of the world. An ordinary schlep being diagnosed with cancer is generally much more likely to survive here than anywhere. Successful and timely treatment reigns here like nowhere else. Do we have our own problems? Absolutely, but I'm not prepared to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Instead, I want all the rest of the "civilized" countries to start bearing their fair share of medical pioneering.

You insinuated that great care is unavailable unless you can afford it.

And yet, our homelessness rate is less than half that of yours.

About infant mortality, it's true that the metrics are different that put America at a disadvantage but even after accounting for that America still has higher infant mortality, at least according to the analyses that were done shortly after Obamacare was passed.

It would be nice to see more recent numbers but I very explicitly remember going over this in detail during the healthcare debates on the Forum.

They cut penalty rates for workers and gave companies more control in wage negotiations.
So yeah i blame them.

Based off ABS census data pulled every 5 years. The ratio worsened to 0.5% in the 2016 census.

Oh, do tell us about the differences between the countries methodologies. I mean, I'd be happy to explain to you why infant mortality is different, like how Americans consider any demonstration of life at all a live birth, whereas there are countries that deem any infant death within 24 hours of birth as not being a live birth.

We do, because we have higher pre-term births, but I imagine you remember that from previous discussions.

Seems like just something that would follow routine healthcare access trends.

A quick search shows it follows the same racial and ethnic lines.
