Yes, a significant amount of USD has been printed in the past 2 years; however, the massive spike in reporting seems to be because the federal government changed how it assessed/reported M1 and M2 money supplies.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to actually explain it properly, but searching whether this factoid is true, false, or misleading was very illuminating.

Unless you've just woken up from a coma, there was a pandemic (shut down economy/covid relief money) which accounted for the majority of it. 2017-2019 was widely considered "booming" years.
