It really doesn't.

I don't tend to find original intent arguments to be very strong because adoption requires the consent of thousands of people giving their own interpretation to the words as they read them. Authors will often give contradicting opinions of their own works as they age, so its not surprising to see weird interpretation of their own work that is incoherent with the written message.

If it was meant to convey the message you say then it was poorly written.

Of course itf does. You behave as if the phrase is properly understood by inserting the word "is" in front of subject. I understand that it is properly understood by inserting the word "a" in.front of the word subject.

If the amendment was intended to give birthright citizenship, there is zero reason for the additional condition.

My position requires no insertions to be sensible. Yours does to even pass a basic grammatical test, then needs backflips to avoid saying "if youre a citizen youre a citizen".

Theres better arguments to be made against birthright citizenship than trying to fit an incorrect-on-its-face definition of subject.

I really dont like the idea of birthright citizenship btw, I agree it's ripe for abuse in the modern world and probably shouldnt be a thing.

No, "if you're a member, you're a citizen." No stretch at all.

Seriously, all they are saying is "if you're born here, and a member of our society, you're a citizen. "

If they are saying "if you're born here, and a member of our society, you're a citizen. " then that confers birthright citizenship to virtually every anchor baby. I'd consider shopping at the local supermarket, working a job, and being a part of the community as "a member of our society".

Anchor babies and their parents aren't members of our society. They would be if they went through proper channels and immigrated legally. Doing it legally carries the emphasis that this person is declaring their intent to become a member of our society.

Thats pretty flimsy. That basically means anybody could live here under our laws for generations, go to church, have friends, work and spend money their whole life and not even their children would be "a member of society". Seems pretty ridiculous.

If they sneak in and squat, how exactly are they suddenly members of our society?

Undocumented immigrants pay taxes though, so they're paying into a system you feel they shouldn't be able to access?

Yes.

A nation's services are for its citizens, not for every Tom, Dick and Harry that contributes money to the treasury. I'm all for government provided healthcare for American citizens. However, I would also like to retroactively remove the citizenship of any immigrant taken into this nation since the American People were sold the lie that was the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act. Any immigrant can stay if they have above a 105 IQ score. I don't care if they're a productive member of society.

Kind of disingenuous to push for immigrants to pass an IQ score you can't.
